About this site
Public Retirement Planner is a free website for public employees who are getting close to retirement. Teachers, nurses, office staff, police officers, firefighters and federal workers all face the same hard question: when can I retire, and what will I live on? The official rule books answer it, but they are long and hard to read. This site turns those rules into a few simple questions and a plain answer.
How the tools work
- Each tool asks one question per screen, in plain words, and explains any jargon.
- The answer is written as a sentence, such as "PERS would pay you about $3,000 a month."
- At the end of every tool, "How we worked this out" shows each step of the math and the official source for every number.
- Your answers stay on your own device. Nothing you type is sent to us or anyone else.
Where the numbers come from
We use only official sources: Oregon PERS (oregon.gov/pers), the Social Security Administration (ssa.gov), the Office of Personnel Management (opm.gov) and the Thrift Savings Plan (tsp.gov). Every tool lists its sources with links and the date we last checked them.
How we keep it up to date
Some figures change every year. Social Security publishes new figures each October, and Oregon PERS updates its salary limits and factors each January. We check the official sources when they publish and update the tools and the "last checked" dates.
What this site is not
Estimates, not advice. We are not part of Oregon PERS, Social Security, OPM, the TSP or any other government agency, and we are not financial advisers. Only your retirement system can tell you your actual benefit. Before you choose a retirement date, ask them for an official estimate.
Ads
The site is free because it shows ads. Ads never change the math, and we don't sell or collect your answers. Read our privacy policy to learn how ads use cookies.
